Since antiquity, the scallop shell has symbolized the sea, the voyage and the quest. It was the badge of the pilgrims to the shrine of Apostle St. James, and of the crusaders in their quest to the Holy Land. The scallop shell has, through the ages, been the inspiration for countless works of art. Of universal fame is "The Birth of Venus", from the brush of Botticelli, and the matchless Gold Cup of Cellini, master craftsman. Both of these art treasures have immortalized the scallop shell which is one of nature's simplest and most widely copied art forms and in design is often referred to as "Crusader's Scallop".
