Plans to replace aging Acme market postponed
By NICHOLAS HUBA Staff Writer
LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP — Citing the struggling economy, developer Patrick Moeller has decided to put on hold plans to redevelop the Acme in Peahala Park.
The plan had called for the demolition of the current Acme and the reconstruction of a new, state-of-the-art supermarket.
"It's going to be at least a year until any work starts," Moeller said. "The economy is one of the reasons that we are going to hold off on doing the improvements."
Moeller said over the next couple of weeks he is going to sit down with Acme officials to discuss issues regarding the project.
"There are a couple of issues that we have to work out with the lease, but overall I'm committed to the project," Moeller said.
Before full-scale construction on the project starts, Moeller said that he is going to make improvements to the parking lot.
"We're going to clean up the parking and make other improvements there," Moeller said. "But at the earliest, construction would start next winter."
In July 2007, the township's Land Use Board approved Moeller's plan.
The plan included demolishing the current 20,736-square- foot supermarket and replacing it with a 32,620-square-foot supermarket. The plan includes a 3,368-square-foot retail area and a 3,883- square-foot, 88-seat restaurant. The plan also called for the traffic light on Long Beach Boulevard to be moved north approximately 25 feet.
Acme operates 130 supermarkets in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, according to its Web site.
Beach Haven Park Stadium 5, the 10,962- square-foot movie theater, will remain during the reconstruction.
Rick Reynolds, executive director of the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce, said that these tough economic times for any business project right now.
"It's difficult for anyone to open a business right now, because of the tight credit market that it out there," Reynolds said. "I'm concerned not just for over here but for the whole country at this point."
"All economies have their cycles, for people who have things positioned well they are going to have success when the economy rebounds," Reynolds added.

I am wonderng if anyone knows what has happened to the Davison Lab web cam that shows the Brant Beach ocean view? It seems to have stopped operating on 11/06. Do they shut it down after a certain time of year? I like to view it a couple times a week to get my LBI "fix". The view and this question board are my year round connections to my favorite vacation spot, LBI. I have resorted to viewing a beach in NC. It is lovely, but doesn't show me the place I really love. Thanks for any info anyone has. JillB in PA

Same here...I enjoyed those cameras that PruZack ran a few years back--showed the traffic coming into the island and the beach/ocean. Wasted many a moment during work looking at those!

Subject: 2009 Rentals
To the owners: How are your 2009 rentals sizing up? Are your repeaters returning? I noticed the house we've rented many times is up for sale, yet we did just get the rental agreement. My family members own a B&B and an inn in Vermont. With even the simplest vacations becoming a luxury item in this horrible economy, they say customers are becoming very price sensitive. Some of our family members have dropped out for next year, for various reasons and even though we still need a big house, I too am concerned about carrying the extra share. We will go, come hell or high water, still it will not be easy economically for the rest of the family that is coming. Just wondering if some of you owners may have to lower your prices or at least keep it at last year's level. It's not easy on anyone these days.

Also, on the 2009 calendar- the 4th of July falls on a Saturday- who wants to move in on that day? Friday the 3rd is the public holiday and while traffic can be a nightmare for the 4th.. no matter what day it falls; this year, makes it a bit different for would be renters. You could have a party/celebration on the 3rd, but the next morning; you have to get up, clean up and move out; so that comes into play. Some renters may opt to get out and off the island Fri. night. Who knows? Moving in on the 4th- you've already lost half the day but I guess you could whip up a celebration and at least sleep in the next morning. Just know for us, all the packing and prep work, come move in day; that first night, we are all exhausted (but happy) come that night. For owners who clean their own place, I guess this presents a bit of a headache too. Anyway, we're changing our two weeks to include the 4th, so that we don't have this problem. Stu, you hit the nail right on the head- I'm sure many are waiting till spring to see where they will be financially.

Hi Jill, I'm from PA, too. I do not know the answer to your question but I know where you are coming from with the LBI "fix" during the winter. There use to be several cameras showing different parts of LBI but they got rid of them, which I thought was a real shame. What I do for my LBI "fix" is go on You Tube and there are some videos of LBI on it. Also, you can get The Sandpaper online. www.thesandpaper.net I read that throughout the winter months and that keeps me informed on what is going on. Plus the ads are great, too. You can get Copper Kettle Fudge in the winter. You can order it online. For me, it is definately a "taste" of LBI. Also, it is fun sometimes to go on Ebay and type in "Beach Haven NJ" or "Long Beach Island NJ" and see all the old postcards and LBI related stuff people are selling on there. Like yourself, Jill, I can not wait until it is Summer once again and I am back on LBI. :)

We have kept the rates the same for a few years now (tried to limit improvements, etc to keep rent "reasonable"); I have noticed that some two-weekers have become one-weekers. Also some people who used to book as soon as they left in the summer are waiting to spring to see what there personal finacial situation will be.

We never wait till the last minute. Sometimes we've scouted while on our LBI vacation. When you rent as we have, two, sometimes three houses, plus we always end up renting motel rooms, it's always an adventure. Still, when you need to rent a big house as I do, you do have a concern that your partners/family will be able to keep up their share. If I were renting a basic bungalow or townhouse with 2 or 3 bdrms, it would not be a problem but with a larger house you really have to take a lot into consideration. We do not rent above our means, but we do look for the best we can get with what we have. The economy is not helping and some out there are wondering where they will be economically months from now. Hence my question about how the owners are faring. Tough times ahead, but I wish you all good luck on your rentals.

We only rent the summer weeks and are half booked with mostly repeats. Last year everyone on my street were booked and even got a few calls from neighbors asking if I had any weeks open for some of their repeat renters who waited too long to book. With the economy the way it is people tend to stay closer to home to save. My advice to people looking to rent is stay within your means, but dont wait until the last minute that you have to settle for whats left.

We have 2 weeks booked thus far. Non repeaters. This is the third year we have kept our price the same. Since we have been booked for the past 6 summers, and the economy, we have kept it the same.
Summer of '06 we strange for us. We were not booked till into June. Every other year we were booked by around February. Go figure.
Keeping fingers crossed!

Like the song says "These are the good old days". We are now bringing our grandchildren to LBI and the beaches in Holgate are never that crowded. Our grandchildren today, still enjoy playing in the surf, flying kites, riding to the beach in their red Radio Flyer, making sandcastles, collecting shells and those wonderful carefree naps on the beach. Relish those warm memories of summers gone by, but do always try to make new ones, especially with the little ones. It is then, in those moments, that you get to re-live those sweetest of memories. Nothing ever stays the same but children will always have that sense of wonder. So don't despair;I am sure there are many good LBI memories ahead for you.

I think most people having work done, wherever it may be, always try to give the business to local people. If this guy Brennan went outside for the labor to handle the job he obviously felt the time limit was a deciding factor. I hope the place doesnt end up being another Daddy-O. It just seems out of place on the island.

According to former Beach Haven mayor Deb Whitcraft, she has performed quite a few beach weddings that included music, boom-boxes, and even DJs with microphones. Provided that the music isn't overly loud or disturbing to others (since beaches are public) there has never been any objection by the town.

Well I think you're both half-right (and of course half-wrong too). I'm building a house here and, while my contractor and most subs are local (surrounding mainland) and do excellent work, I am using a couple of North Jersey subs simply because they are doing some things nobody here does. I'm not sure why I had to go out-of-area but maybe it's because most homes here are built for summer with different requirements.

When I was a kid, there were no dunes, so if you rented a house right on the beach, you could go out the door and right down to the water. The 1962 storm changed that forever… but for the better. I remember the Lucy Evelyn in Beach Haven, and the Hartman go-carts with the giant orange robot next to them. When I was a teenager, I remember going to the trampolines in Surf City, and trying to learn to do flips to impress the girls (and not get paralyzed in the process). I remember eating at Wida’s, and up to just a few years ago, it still appeared exactly as I remember it as a kid. At least Copper Kettle Fudge is still there… and still the best IMO.

typical local gossip...I didn't get the job so I guess I'll make stuff up and spread rumors. Most of the trades hired are NOT local because he wants the job done by St Pats day (that's 2009 not 2010 if it were done by locals)and yes he bought it from Bob Nardi. FYI...he also owns the Rita's on the south end of the island

Is Brennan the person who brought it from Nardi a few years ago? Or is this a new owner?

Does anyone remember how beautiful Long Beach Island used to back in the 50's and 60's. Without all the traffic, crowds of people at restaurants, houses butted up next to each other on the beach, being able to drive right up to the sand and walk out onto the beach, not having to worry about beach badges or trying to find a place on the beach where you weren't 2 feet away from someone else. Those were truly the good old days

There are many 1962 storm photos on the web, including:

The full story is covered by John Bailey Lloyd in his book "Six Miles at Sea". People did not lose their life because they could not get off of the island. There were, sadly, some deaths in Beach Haven, but I seem to recall that they were officials bravely doing their job to help others.

Long Beach Island was great in the 1970's when I use to go as a kid, too. I would be interested to know what life was like on LBI after that terrible storm in the 1960's. Wasn't most of the homes destroyed or at least severely damaged? Didn't many people lose their lives because there was no way off of the island? When I went in the 1970's, LBI was a charming place and I did not see any damage. Some of you on this message board were around that time after the big storm. What was your experiences? Was it as bad as it looked?

I understand Brennan - the guy who owns most of the gas stations on LBI bought it and is doing a complete rehab but on-the-cheap according to some contractors I spoke with.

extensive renovation in addition to approximately a 20 foot build out to both floors. The new second floor will be used as a banquest space.
